On Tuesday 10 December, Verra hosted a side event at COP25 in Madrid on Making Nested REDD+ Work. We were joined by a number of distinguished panelists bringing real experience from around the world who shared the latest approaches to advancing REDD+. The conversation highlighted the importance of driving private finance to mitigation in critically threatened forests, while supporting government REDD+ efforts.
Our panel included:
- Mike Korchinsky, Founder, Wildlife Works
- Mariodly Sanchez, AIDER, Peru
- Naomi Swickard, Chief Market Development Officer, Verra (Moderator)
- Duncan Van Bergen, Vice President, Shell New Energies
- Francisco Charry, MADS, Government of Colombia
Our global panelists shared their experiences with REDD+ in countries like Peru and Colombia, such as how project developers and governments are working together to align accounting. We also talked about how corporates are approaching REDD+: by first working diligently on the long-term energy transition needed to get to the 1.5 degree target while driving finance to mitigation as quickly as possible. Finally, the speakers covered how voluntary market finance can help countries reach the Paris Agreement goals and help raise ambition, a critically important topic to every COP discussion.
Below are a few pictures and quotes from the packed and overflowing event. Thank you all very much for your contributions and making it a success!
